The Behind the Scenes IS the product

This could go down as our favourite project ever. Being able to SHOWCASE the filmmaking process in such a fun, dynamic format was something else. The challenge gave us constraints and the format of the challenge proved perfect for showcasing not only the client's products (Nanlite lighting) but doing it in a completely organic and effortless way.

JOKER

Joker (2019) is without a doubt one of the defining films of the last decade. We wanted to do it justice.

We didn't have a hospital. We had a studio and whatever was lying around. An old radio and an upside down TV became a heart monitor. A vacuum cleaner, tucked into frame just right, read as medical equipment. Somewhere in there, is a plastic bag on a coat stand. The perfect IV bag set-up to be honest. Chef's kiss work from Sal.

Babylon

The moment we saw this scene from Damien Chazelle's 'Babylon' (2022), we were in love. To re-create it was a great honour, despite having our work cut out for us with that wooden floor.

Luckily, they had enough panels in the local DIY shop, so we bought them all. Aga and Sal went to work and built an entire floor. They then applied the 2m+ long vinyl, AGED it, AGED the floor. That's before we even got to the lighting set-up.

Long story short though... We SMASHED it and the scene looked like a million $$$

Natalia channeled her inner Margot Robbie and we have to say. She SMASHED it.

Talk to Me

The scenes were chosen in order to provide a wide variety of filmmaking and lighting techniques. This one was no different. A24's 'Talk to Me' has this one scene with the main character looking out of a window, during downpour.

What we didn't know (but our Gaffer David did) is that the lighting crew on that production actually fell ill and it was the Electric department filling in and quite frankly BUTCHERING the scene a bit. The downpour on the window is very exaggerated and it might be possible that ours actually looks better and far more natural.

The large plexi glass and Kacper's bike washing device came in CLUTCH.

Euphoria

The best lighting we've EVER seen in a TV series. We are OBSESSED with Euphoria and this scene in particular posed an interesting challenge.

We analysed the lighting, we used the longest tube lights we've ever seen and we even went as far as using a vintage lens, in order to get the closest image we could to the original. Come on.

RECIPE: 5 lights, a big bounce board, plenty of haze and a vintage lens
